2017 BLA Career Day

On a rainy March morning, more than two dozen alumni went “back to the future” at Boston Latin Academy, where they met with 300 sophomores at the annual Alumni Career Day at Boston Latin Academy. For some, this was their first visit back to Townsend Street since graduation. Others had graduated from a different building in a different century, but relished their time with this generation of students.

Sophomores had ranked their interest in 15 professions and then had the chance to meet with alums working in their top two choices. Alums told students about their own education and career history before opening the floor to student questions. Students also learned about the breadth of work options within a field. For instance, an attorney with an international corporation was paired with an attorney working in the Commonwealth’s criminal court system. Professions represented were advertising, business, computers, criminal justice, education, engineering, finance, government, law, library science, medicine, nursing, performing arts, pharmacy, physical therapy, scientific research, social work, and sports medicine.

Many of the alums ended their visit with a student-led tour of the school, and several sought out their former faculty. Margaret Sullivan coordinated the alumni volunteers and BLA faculty member and alum Elvira DeLuca coordinated the students. The association thanks Gia Adams, Maria Barakat, Carol Bender, Patrick Brophy, Antoinette Coakley, Dorothy Curtis, Mothler Dalexis, Kevin Finn, John Flynn, Gwendolyn Goodwin, Michael Lester, Bobby Lam, Bob Magner, Jason Manhart, Fabricio Paes, Cailin Pagel, Patrick Paul, Sheriece Perry, Richard Pierre, Casey O’Bryan, Monica Roberts Jonathan Sanchez, Bridget Sweet, Vadra Ward Tabb, and Shirley Woo.

John Tetlow Portrait Frame

On August 24, 2016, Massachusetts College of Art allowed the GLS/BLA Association to reclaim a long lost frame to an important portrait. The frame belongs to the portrait of John Tetlow, the first headmaster at GLS who served from 1878-1910. Tetlow’s portrait, commissioned by the GLS Alumni Association, was completed by Ernest Epson in 1910. The portrait was hung in a built-in ornate frame in what was the library at the GLS on Huntington Avenue. When the school moved to Codman Square, the portrait was taken out of its frame and the frame remained behind.

A four man crew delicately removed the frame from the bookcases and transported it to Boston Latin Academy where it will be re-installed. The portrait is currently undergoing restoration with Oliver Brothers and we look forward to bringing the two back together later this year!
